Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)

DVT is a blood clot in a deep vein, usually in the legs. Blood clots can partially or completely block the blood flow in a blood vessel and such clots can form in superficial veins or deep veins with the latter being more serious and requiring immediate medical attention.

How are clots formed

  • Slow blood flow often due to limited movement associated with paralysis or medical conditions leading to bed confinement can be a reason for clotformation
  • Blood vessels can get damaged due to surgery, muscle injury, or fractures which can cause a clot
  • Cancer and related treatments, few other chronic illnesses can lead to clot formation
  • Increased estrogen levels caused by pregnancy or blood control pills or inherited clotting disorders

In addition to leg pain, DVT is characterized by skin discoloration, leg cramps, and swelling.

Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD)

Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) or Peripheral Vascular Disease is a disorder that occurs in the arteries that carry blood to the legs and arms. Plaque deposits lead to narrow, stiff, and blocked arteries, a condition called atherosclerosis. Insufficient blood flow leads to malnourished organs and tissues and PAD is a progressive disease.

The predominant symptom of PAD is claudication, which is a type of muscle pain due to improper blood flow to the legs and its symptoms may include a burning sensation or numbness, weakness, or discoloration of legs.

Other symptoms may include cold or numb fingers which may also look pale. Sores appear on your arms and hands that do not seem to heal easily.

Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI)

When the veins in our legs and the valves in them stop functioning properly, blood finds it difficult to fight gravity and move back up to reach the heart. If this happens, blood starts flowing backward and may start to pool around the veins, in your legs. This is a condition termed chronic venous insufficiency.
